Nothing compares to the scent of freshly baked pie. For childhood friends, Anna and Lenore, baking is in their blood. These two lovely gals grew up together in California’s Central Valley and have been friends since 3rd grade. With a passion for supporting local farmers and a love for baking, it is no surprise that they formed Three Babes Bakeshop.
In just two short years their business has skyrocketed and now includes shipping pies all over the country. Using only organically grown ingredients, their pies have an incredible, flaky crust that is dusted with brown sugar and then filled with luscious, seasonal fruits from California’s fertile valleys. Biting into a slice of their pie, you can taste the succulent flavors that only mother nature can produce. When asked what inspires them to keep baking such incredible pies each day, they both had reasons that further express their mission.
“I’m always inspired by the changing seasons and by talking to our farmers. New fruit comes into season with each passing week, and our farmers are always the first to tell us what they are excited about. Their enthusiasm is contagious, and I know that nobody knows good fruit like they do. It really is my pleasure to be able to share the wonderful produce grown here in Northern California with everybody via our pies.” –Anna
Lenore, like Anna, has a deep love for her homeland and passion for farmers.
“We both come from families rooted in a culture of hard work and community-minded action, and carrying on the work of our parents is a daily inspiration to me. Hopefully, we will one day have a big business that will provide employment for many people. Owning a small food business is really tough, but I’m always inspired by our mission – to create a better, more sustainable food system, to promote American industry, and to encourage people to think about the power that they have to create change through their actions and purchases. Sometimes we get SO tired, but if we want a better system, it’s up to us to build it. Luckily, we have a lot of support from the community here in San Francisco.” — Lenore
Located in the back patio of the Stable Cafe on Folsom in the Mission, Three Babes Bakeshop is open Wednesday through Saturday. Pies can also be picked up at Good Eggs, which also offers delivery service to Marin, the Peninsula and the East Bay. For those living outside of Northern California, select pies can be shipped right to your home. Their web-site lists the pies of the week as well as which pies can be shipped out of state. Their Bittersweet Chocolate Pecan is idea for shipping and is one of their biggest sellers. Made with a graham crust, it is a nice variation of the classic pecan and the combination of bittersweet chocolate and pecans will melt in your mouth. Pick up a whole for your next dinner party and watch it disappear.
Apricot Blackberry Lattice is the hot flavor of the moment and quite simply irresistible. Juicy, fleshy, golden apricots with tart blackberries, this pie is a seduction of the senses. The buttery crust encompasses the fruits and the lattice gives this pie three layers of blissful enjoyment.
